Coaching kids about soccer is no rocket science but yes, it requires skill, knowledge, and a lot of patience. To teach youth soccer, what follows are well-known tactics. Implementing them religiously will do wonders to your team.
Motivate them to learn: You know it but how do you identify the best way to do it? Give freedom to the kids to do their own stuff and even if they make mistakes, it is OK. This will have the effect of the kids to be more confident, more innovative, and have fun at the same time.
Name the teams: Divide the groups into small teams which allow you to better coordinate the affairs. Also it is a great idea to give names to the teams as this inculcates a sense of association.
Evaluate failures and success: Define the standards against which the performance would be measured to coach youth soccer. For instance, the fact that kids like the practice sessions can be taken as a benchmark. Are the kids enjoying soccer or playing as a team? Are the players learning the skill of passing, dribbling, and dealing with the ball?
Give rewards: Rewards encourage the new as well as skilled players in the same way. And the rewards can be fairly simple. For instance awarding the winner team with an hour’s additional break or leaving early for the day. And avoid giving rewards for individual performance. It is not feasible in a game like soccer where some players are better than others. It is therefore better to acknowledge the team effort.
Tackling bad behavior: In teaching soccer, bad behavior of players can negatively affect the entire team’s performance if not handled well. For example, if a player is always late for the drills, do not ignore it. Have him perform a simple act as a punishment to make others aware of such mistakes.
Similarly, parents who tend to interfere in the team’s activities should also be handled like this. Don’t let it happen and give clear instructions. As a coach, be responsible to make decisions for the team. But, involvement of parents to a certain level is also important.
Be in charge: Every single act of yours is closely observed by the players as it’s natural for them to copy you. So be sure of your demeanor in public. Be good and courteous to your colleagues, opposite team, and fellow team members. Reach the ground for the practice sessions in advance or before the players. Do not disapprove of the players or the referee anytime during the practice matches.
