The Rise Of Roy Hodgson

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Under the superb guidance of Roy Hodgson, Fulham have reached the final of the 2010 Europa League defying the odds along the way. Italian giants Juventus and holders Shaktar Donetsk were just two of the teams Fulham beat during a memorable campaign.

As a player, Hodgson was on the books at Crystal Palace but never made a first team appearance. Hodgson started to make a name for himself when he moved into management. His early career in Sweden saw him win the Swedish title twice with Halmstads in 1976 and 1979.

From there, Hodgson moved to Switzerland with Neuchatel Xamax before taking over the Swiss national team who he guided to the 1994 World Cup Finals and the 1996 Euro Finals. For the next 2 season, Hodgson was the manager of the Italian giants Internazionale. In his final season as manager of Inter, they reached the 1997 UEFA Cup final before he headed to Blackburn Rovers. Things didn’t go to plan and Hodgson was sacked after 18 months.

For the next few years, Hodgson held a number of managerial positions but never really settled anywhere for long and in 2005, he took over the Finnish national team and took them tantalisingly close to the Euro 2008 finals.

At the end of 2007, Fulham offer Hodgson the managers job as at the time, they were struggling in the Premier League and needed a change of direction. Hodgson worked his magic as Fulham stayed up and the following season qualified for the UEFA Europa League by finishing 7th.

Fulham’s first season in Europe has been nothing short of spectacular. Fulham have met some tough opposition including Juventus and the German champions. Now all that stands in their way of glory is Athletico Madrid.

But what next for Roy Hodgson?  There is no doubt that his influence on Fulham will not have gone unnoticed. Although Hodgson has been linked with the England job, Fabio Capello is doing a fine job and isn’t going anywhere. Perhaps it is a bit more realistic to think that Hodgson could well take over the English national team after the Euro 2012 finals.

U.S. Soccer Denies Charlie Davies A Chance At 2010 World Cup

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

U.S. Soccer announced it has chosen its preliminary 30-player roster for the 2010 World Cup. Hometown newspapers reported news of local players making the U.S. Soccer 2010 World Cup roster, but one person who did not make the cut, Charlie Davies, is capturing U.S. Soccer World Cup headlines nationwide. Many American soccer fans, along with the media, were rooting for Charlie Davies to make the team, but his recovery from last fall’s near fatal car crash has come up short.

The roster for the U.S. Soccer 2010 World Cup

The U.S. Soccer 2010 World Cup roster will be cut down to 23 players by U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bob Bradley on June 1. Bradley believes Charlie Davies is not ready to play at the World Cup lever, and he is facing much criticism for choosing other players that many believe are the cheapest personal loans at hand. One name that surfaced among Bradley’s dissenters is Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Findley. Findley, according to U.S. Soccer Daily, left a game last weekend with an injury and has failed to produce this season. U.S. Soccer Daily is asking for answers, writing, “You mean to tell me that an 80 percent Charlie Davies can’t add the same things that a dinged up Robbie Findley can?”

Charlie Davies’ motley replacements

While Charlie Davies’ accident leaves him off the U.S. Soccer 2010 World Cup preliminary roster, the New York Times reports that Bradley selected “a motley collection” of forwards. Jozy Altidore, the youngest, is considered the most talented. Despite a hamstring strain, veteran center forward Brian Ching made the cut. Instead of Davies, Bradley chose Los Angeles Galaxy Edson Buddle and American striker Herculez Gomez, who plays in Mexico. “He remained part of the conversation right up until yesterday,” said Bradley Tuesday while announcing the roster on ESPNews. “We just felt right now, for Charlie, it is in his best interest to continue his rehab and continue to get back to where he was last year.”

Charlie Davies’ near fatal accident

Charlie is 23-years old, and he is from New Hampshire and Boston College. The Associated Press reports that Davies was in his first season with French soccer club Sochaux when he was seriously hurt in a crash on the George Washington Parkway in Virginia that killed another passenger. Davies had a broken and dislocated left elbow, a broken right femur, tibia and fibula, and a broken nose, forehead and eye socket. He also suffered from a ruptured bladder and bleeding on the brain.

The 2010 World Cup dates

The U.S. Soccer preliminary 2010 World Cup team starts practicing Monday in Princeton, NJ. Dates for the U.S. Soccer World Cup dates will include exhibitions against the Czech Republic on May 25 in East Hartford, CT, and four days later compete against Turkey in Philadelphia. Opening the 2010 World Cup dates in South Africa, U.S Soccer will play against Australia on June 5. Eliminated in the first round of the FIFA World Cup in 2006, the Americans open the tournament against England, one of the 2010 World Cut favorites.

Youth Soccer Drills:5 Action Ideas To Train

Youth soccer drills

What if I told you that it is necessary that you design a practice schedule that prepares and supports the development of the players? Carrying out the youth soccer drills is necessary to add to the player’s talents as there are no shortcuts to success.

Practice sessions in youth soccer coaching should include suitable drills that help players learn the basics. Have your players do the stretches and warm-up sessions before they start with the practice sessions. By doing the stretching and warm-up exercises players ready their body to take the physical stress in practice.

Every practice session should necessarily have an explicit objective. For this reason, identify and then focus on just one or two drills per week. Draw your training plan in a manner that requires you to cover a different set of drills every single week. When players start with the practice matches, they should be made to perform such drills that show up their areas if improvement.

A good number of matches are won because one team out of the two wears out through the end of the play. So, make sure your strength exercises include such drills that make use of the soccer drills at every stage.

Youth Soccer Drills

Your youth soccer practice can be conveniently divided into two different types. It may be cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength that results in developing agility, strength, co-ordination, speed, and quickness in the players.

In relation to youth soccer drills, “running in formation” is one that is very interesting and efficient. This involves the complete team. It is a nice way to inculcate teamwork. The players get an opportunity to learn to stay in step with your guidance. And, it is wonderful to actually see your team running in great formation before the match.

“Following the leader” is another wonderful warm-up drill. This develops a player’s ability to dribble the ball with their heads up and following orders. It also makes use of the entire team with each player having a ball.

Control over the ball, also known as “touch on the ball” is a necessity in soccer. Use the “roll over” drill to teach the kids this skill. This drill is total fun. The players may feel a little intimidated in the beginning because they can’t keep the ball straight in a line. But this will improve with time and practice.

This drill makes the players learn the valuable skills in balance, agility, and a touch on the ball.

Your kids soccer drills should cover just about everything that a soccer player must learn. “Karaoke” drill is the best for this sort of an exercise. Using this drill, the kids run, handle the ball, and keep their balance along with building cardiac endurance.

Don ‘t undermine its importance. When it comes to youth soccer drills, this one is the most superior drill to develop all skills essential for a young player.

Muay Thai Kickboxing Strengthens Sports and Leisure Destination Facility in Thailand

The competition to become Asia’s top international sports facility just became more difficult as Phuket International Academy Sports and Leisure Club (PIASLC) has selected former Muay Thai champion “Thanootong’’ Prasert Intanoo to head the martial arts program at the extensive Phuket, Thailand sports centre.   Just as muay thai kickboxing requires perseverance and ability, the assignment is another example of the PIASLC recruiting leading experts to work at the emerging first-class facility and help position it as the premier sports and leisure destination in Asia.

The Phuket International Academy Sports and Leisure Club (PIASLC) complex has programmes attractive to just about anyone including Olympic class athletes, residents, visitors and children.   Aquatics, running, rugby, football (soccer), strength training, tennis and much more are on offer already or coming soon at what is becoming a benchmark as a regional hub for sports, arts and wellness in Thailand and Asia, and quite possibly the world.

The PIASLCis organized into specialized sports academies.  The new additionof Prasert Intanoo will bring the Martial Arts Academy to the forefront.   The PIA Aquatics Academy and the Football Academy are already positioned as leading programmes. The Football Academy includes the world-renowned Brazilian Soccer School (BSS).   Now Muay Thai joins the highly regarded youth soccer training programme offered at the best sports and recreation facility in Southeast Asia.

Former Thailand national flyweight champion Khun Prasert was a Muay Thai professional boxer for 15 years with an outstanding record of seventy victories.  He graduated from university with a degree in physical education.  He went on to work for the Marriott hospitality group as a Muay Thai trainer, and in his role as Recreation Supervisor directed wellness, corporate teambuilding and kid’s zone activities. Khun “Nok” (his Thai nickname) is also a qualified Pilates teacher and personal trainer and certified by the Thai Yoga Institute as a teacher.

The PIASLC is part of the Phuket International Academy (PIA).  PIA  is a pioneering sports, education, arts and wellness facility located in Phuket, Thailand.   PIA comprises three synergistic centres: the PIA Day School, the PIA Sports and Leisure Club, and the PIA Mind Centre.  They offer students, parents and those from the wider Phuket, and international communities, a modern, sustainable facility which focuses on education, sports, arts and wellness.  Located in the northern reaches of Phuket, just 15 minutes from Phuket International Airport, PIA also hosts two 38-room boutique hotels and a broad range of facilities ideal for corporate retreats, seminars, and teambuilding programmes and events.  The view of Phuket International Academy is to realize the intellectual, physical, creative and spiritual potential of all students, members and participants of the three centres.

The Phuket International Academy Day School (PIADS) is working to become a three programme International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The Phuket International Academy Day School has first-rate facilities, teachers, trainers, staff and administration.

Phuket International Academy Mind Centre (PIAMC) is now holding retreats while the balance of the complex is nearing completion and will shortly start to offer a additional training in the cultivation of cognitive and emotional balance.  Featuring openess, the Phuket International Academy Mind Centre conducts retreats and seminars. Working in close interaction with the Phuket International Academy Day School and the PIA Sports and Leisure Club, the programmes offered through PIAMC will contribute to participant’s improved mental sense of balance and wellbeing.
