It is important that every player has a soccer ball each. Plan for several activities which are individualistic in nature; which can be performed using the ball. The players should practice shooting, dribbling and hitting the ball against the wall etc. Avoid using any lines or marks with a view to keep the movement free as far as possible.

Upon completion of individual activities in soccer coaching the players should be involved in some group activities. For example; passing and receiving the ball are fun drills to practice. Without a goal keeper the kids should play soccer in teams. Don’t restrict the players by setting boundaries, at the same time they should be allowed to hit the goals.

Upon learning to attack the players should be taught how to defend. This style of coaching will enable the players to develop their own style.

During this drill groups of teams should be formed by the players. Usually, when shifting from individual to group activities, the kids take time to adjust to the concept of team play. The coach should just guide the players and no more than that.

To win matches the players should play as a unit, this should be taught to them. The drill ingrains the knowledge of playing as a group without doing much with the ball and to practice in a limited area.

This is the easiest way to conduct a soccer exercise. Have an open idea to mix and add couple of free soccer drills that you think will make the kids learn soccer better.

Soccer Drills

To begin with, mark a square of about 20 yards by 20 yards. And this depends on the number of players and their age.

The same number of players should be positioned evenly alongside the square. Players, with their own ball, stand opposite to each other on the sides of the square.

With the coach’s whistle, each player will dribble the ball to the opposite side and stop the ball on the line opposite to them. Of all the free soccer drills, this drill coaches the players to dribble across the square with their heads up and and do not interfere in each others’ path and thats why this is effective.

One can add more fun by making the players dribble across the square and back again making them to turn 180 degrees with the ball. The number of the times the players have to dribble the ball can be varying. Let them compete where the final player is eliminated until there is only one player left.

In addition, when the number of players are few, one can make the players run with the ball and not to dribble it.

The coach can have great fun with this drill and simultaneously teach the kids many important techniques of dribbling with the ball. One way of making soccer drills interesting is mixing a whole lot of them; some tough and some light. It is absolutely perfect, if some are just added for fun and not directly linked to the soccer game.

In soccer coaching, it is also important to realize that kids should not do too much of anything.

When these free soccer drills are applied in your training programs, you make the kids to learn the essentials of the game quickly.

In Soccer Practice, the position of the ball with respect the player decides the heading technique. For example, players in the defensive third generally head the ball high and wide , away from the goal.

And the same differs for the midfield players for they head the ball accurately to the attacking players.

The fear of being struck in the face by the ball should be won when it comes to heading the ball. Free soccer drills use a sponge type ball to address this.

In some cases, it may become necessary to use a slightly larger and lighter ball like a beach ball, to reduce the fear. While teaching heading skills, Coaches usually position the players on their knees to ensure proper balance of the lower body. That allows the players to concentrate on the action of the upper body.

Players move onto the next level of hitting the ball in the standing position, when they are comfortable striking the ball with their heads. This is the stage in soccer coaching where they will begin to learn about the contributions the lower body makes to heading.

Next comes the tossing of the ball between the players in a stable standing position, and then comes the tossing in motion. Let the players to jump and head the ball with the help of a one-foot take off, when they are more confident. Challenge them by offering heading drills with subtle and game-like defensive pressure.

Refining the heading skills will add more structure to the game and will develop intentional play.

Do yourself a favor and incorporate free soccer drills that do not initially use a ball. Without the ball, the players gain confidence in their moving skills. When the players demonstrate competence with movement, they can practice with the ball.

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times that in coaching soccer drills, all tactics, skills, and teamwork taught to the players ultimately lead to a shot on the goal. It requires both skill and character to produce quality shooting. But apart from this, there is something else that is equally important and that is forceful attitude.

All the players must be involved in this but more importantly; it is up to the forward players to shoot the ball. When teaching soccer, shooting should be at the top of your list.

There are so many things that may be a consequence of shooting. Shots can be redirected into the goal. It is a possibility that the goalkeeper may very well drop the ball at the foot of your forward player. Directionless shots can become beautiful passes. Ground shots may spring back. You can even score a goal by a straight shot.

When conducting soccer practice, the attacking players try to convert every goal scoring opportunity into a goal. They are conditioned in a way that the only thought that keeps roaming inside their mind is getting the ball into the nets. These attacking players are known as sniffers in England. It is so because they are always looking for scoring opportunities.

Soccer Coaching

They consider every chance the last chance to score a goal and hence shoot accordingly. You’ll always find them at the right place at the right time. Amazingly, they have the ability to be in the wrong place at the right time. So, in coaching soccer drills motivate the players to kick the ball whenever they can.

As a general rule, any kick that causes the ball to go towards the goal is considered as a shot. But the most successful technique to drive the ball is striking it through the middle by using the laces of the foot. The player’s head should be over the ball, his toe extended, and his upper body should remain steady.

In the course of coaching drills, teach your players to shoot the ball wide and low to the goalie. In such a scenario, high shots are less preferred that low ground shots. This happens due to the fact that goalies have to stop the low ground shots by stretching their hands a lot more in comparison to high shots, thus making it difficult.

When kids practice inside the regulation sized goals, they are likely to score more by striking the ball above the goalie’s head. You need to discourage your players on this as this leads them to a habit of shooting high goals. In coaching soccer drills, don’t allow the kids to play in adult sized goals to stop this practice.

So now go teach you kids to become master shooters when it comes to scoring goals by checking the goalie’s position once before they are ready to shoot.

What if I told you that young players find it really hard to kick a soccer ball using a straight leg? In coaching soccer drills, it’d not just the players but also the coaches who have a problem here. The player keeps overall balance and the leg to be used to kick the ball is bent at the knee. Both posture and strength to kick the ball comes out from below the knee.

In soccer practice, this is the opening pose for just about all types of kicks. The increase of rate of the foot from below the knee puts together a powerful blow on the ball. This gives players the power to execute a variety of kicks. Nevertheless, it depends upon the type of contact that the ball has with the foot which concludes the kick’s style.

For example; it could be hit very high, driven low, swung over left, or lean towards right.

There are three vital passes in soccer i.e. a side foot pass, the outside of the foot pass, and the instep drive. Let’s talk about them further.

Soccer Coaching

The side foot pass: In teaching soccer, the simplest and the most commonly used pass is this. It is generally used for making short distance passes. Despite the fact that this is somewhat slow and predictable, it’s easy to learn and simple to execute. The contact with the ball is made on the inside of the ankle and the foot with the foot turned outwards.

With the help of the foot, the pass is modified into a quick flick for short distances.

In coaching drills, it’s imperative that the players maintain a comfortable posture.

The Instep Drive: Both the versions of instep drive i.e. the low driven version and the lofted version are brought into play to pass the ball over longer distances. Once the players are confident in executing it, make a “chip pass” or an “in swinging pass” by introducing some changes in it. Because the approach of the instep drive is angled to some extent, the non kicking foot is positioned about 12 inches toward the side of and behind the ball.

The ball then comes into contact with the laces and inside of the foot which must be hard and extended.

So, go ahead and teach your players these basic kicking techniques with variations to make the ball do slightly different things.

That’s probably because the similarity between coaching and educating the players has been getting some recognition in past few years.

Regrettably, many coaches still don’t understand that when teaching soccer, drawing a coaching plan based on the player’s needs is of paramount importance. The players must be taught about the game as a person along with their professional conditioning and training. Lastly, but still no less in importance is to keep the kids engaged in meaningful activities. This becomes even more important when the weather is windy, wet, or cold. It is well known that the kids love playing in the rain. Hence, instead of simply cancelling the session, it makes more sense to have them play soccer games or something like that.

Just be sure that the kids have additional layer of clothing and proper shoes in situations like these.

Let me ask you a simple question! How often do you attempt to perform the drills for soccer that you plan for your kids before they begin with them? In case you’re a successful coach, this habit surely has a major role to play. This is the best approach.

Kids tend to learn quickly by way of looking at them. Kids are sure to have fun watching their coach carry out the drills and subsequently making it simple for them to understand. Here are 2 offensive soccer drills that you can teach your kids.

Segregate your team members into teams of 8 people each. 6 players should be positioned in such a way that they face each other and the remaining 2 players should stand on either sides of the rectangle. While the team retaining the possession of the ball has the choice to use players on both the sides, the players on the sides can only touch the ball once. Also, they are not allowed to score.

This drill has an important role to play in improving the player’s dribbling and shooting skills, and controlling the ball. Besides, this soccer practice allows the player’s to improve upon their endurance and strength many times more.
